Dear Readers,
We have been watching the news reports about Hurricane Harvey with both sad and happy hearts.
Sad because, well obviously, this is a huge disaster for all of Southeast Texas and beyond and it is hard to even imagine the suffering and misery.
But also with happy hearts because it is at least clear that emergency response finally includes pets as a matter of course.
Almost every newscast includes photos of at least one pet, sometimes many, being rescued along with its people.
Remember Katrina?
Remember the reports of people refusing rescue at their own peril because pets were not allowed on rescue vehicles?
Remember the stories of the pets left behind by heartbroken evacuees and of pets taking months to be reunited, if ever, with their owners?
We’ve come a long way in the past decade.
That doesn’t mean that the people and pets of Southeast Texas don’t need our help, of course, so we are asking you to join us in doing what we can to relieve some of the suffering.
The best way to do that from here is with money.
There are a lot of both people and animal agencies looking for help.
One of the best general lists we have found is from the Bark magazine at thebark.com/content/hurricane-harvey-call-action.
There you’ll find a list of animal specific agencies and general national lists of people oriented efforts and how best to support them.
It’s a good start to get you started.
And thanks to all of you for all you do!
On a much happier note, have you signed up yet for the Rover Run 5K and Family Fun Day, on September 10, beginning at 10 a.m. at Fallbrook Recreation Center?
You can sign up at www.oswegohumane.org
There will be a timed or untimed 5K, a 1-mile Family Walk, games for kids, a picnic lunch, raffles, the NYS Police K-9 Unit doing a demonstration and meet and greet.
Dogs are welcome but don’t forget to bring proof of rabies vaccination.
