Public Safety and Justice cadets learn from NYS Police K9 Team

Students enrolled in the Public Safety and Justice program at Oswego County BOCES learned last week what it means to ‘take a bite out of crime.’ Mark Bender, the students’ instructor and a full-time New York State Trooper brought his canine partner, Mandin, in to the class for a live demonstration.

Bender and Mandin demonstrated for the students their abilities as a team in a variety of mock situations.

Mandin, a commissioned New York State Police Canine trained in handler protection is pictured protecting his partner, Trooper Mark Bender, during a mock exercise at Oswego County BOCES for students enrolled in the Public Safety and Justice program. Ronald Camp, Director Career and Technical Education at OCB, played the part of an uncooperative criminal for the exercise and is pictured charging towards Trooper Bender. In addition to his duties with the NYS Police, Bender is a Public Safety and Justice Instructor at OCB.

The students watched first-hand how the duo work together to conduct a narcotics search, apprehend a criminal, and conduct a traffic stop.

Mandin was commissioned as a NYS Police Canine in 2012 after an extensive 20-week training program with Trooper Bender in Cooperstown.

Mandin is named in honor of Trooper Amanda Anna who was killed in the line of duty in May of 2012.

Public Safety and Justice Program Instructors are highly-trained professionals currently working in the field, allowing the program to stay current and better prepare its students for today’s workforce. Trooper Bender is in his 11th year at OCB and his 19th year with the New York State Police.
