Fulton, NY – Students participating in Oswego County Opportunities’ Rural After School Program were recently treated to a fly fishing expedition on Fulton’s Lake Neatahwanta.
Coordinated by RASP Senior Youth Specialist, Jill Fratangelo, through collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County, the outing allowed the students to experience the sport of fly-fishing.

“It was an excellent learning experience for the students,” said Fratangelo. “Linda Brosch of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County and Fran Verdoliva, NYS DEC Salmon River Corridor Program Coordinator, were great as they taught the students about fly fishing and the intricacies of casting a fly rod on the lake. I am pleased that we were able to collaborate with Cornell Cooperative Extension. It is a wonderful resource that provides educational opportunities for youth all across the county that help young people learn new skills, make new friends, and build the confidence they need to succeed. For many it was their first experience with fly-fishing, however I doubt it will be their last. They really enjoyed themselves.”
Fratangelo added that the fly fishing expedition was part of the Rural After School Program’s Summer Program hosted by the Fulton Junior High School. Available at no cost to students, OCO’ Rural After School Program provides academic, emotional and social support to assist youth in building skills that lead to academic excellence, social competence and community responsibility.
