First grade students at Fairgrieve Elementary School have reason to celebrate and that reason is READING. School librarian Barb Senecal honored the first grade students for their reading achievements and their participation in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program this school year with a Teddy Bear Picnic.
Accelerated Reader is a national reading incentive program designed to inspire children to read. Students across the United States, including those at Fairgrieve, sign AR books out of their school’s library, read the books, take computerized reading comprehension tests about the books at their own pace and earn points based on the number of questions they answer correctly. Librarians and teachers have the ability, through the AR program, to track each student’s reading abilities including the amount and rate of reading while also monitoring progress and comprehension.
Top AR point earners from Fairgrieve’s first grade received special recognition in front of the entire school during a recent morning express program and all students in the grade level participated in the picnic luncheon. The picnic was held in the school library and the students enjoyed a special lunch, courtesy of Subway, followed by a sweet ice cream treat. Mrs. Senecal presented each first grader with a bookmark to commemorate their reading achievements this school year and encouraged the students to keep reading books and continuing to visit the school library during summer months.
The library at Fairgrieve Elementary School will be open to students every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. during the summer months. For questions or more information about the summer hours for the Fairgrieve library, call the school office at 593-5550.
