‘The Art of Motion’ Season’s First OCAY League Competition Theme

The first competition of the season for the Oswego County Academic Youth (OCAY) League brought teams of students who are creative, possess time management and collaboration skills as well as strengths in the following areas: physics, engineering, art, performing arts, biology, sports medicine, history, popular culture, photography and video editing.
The theme for the competition was the “art of motion.”
The art of motion required teams to complete tasks including timed academic quizzes, kinetic sculpture, a “Claymation” movie and a physical expression dance.
The teams did not know what their competition theme would be until they arrived at the event site when they were provided with a box of materials to create the tasks, all within specific timed guidelines and rules.
Independent judges scored and graded the students’ submissions using rubric guidelines.
When all of the scores were tallied, the team from Mexico earned the top scores and the gold medal.
Team members included: Rob Cassidy, Chynia Cummins, Madeline Higby, Marisa Higby, Derrick Mosher, Ben Pelow, Jolene Pettit, Caitlin Spurling, A.J. Yost and Rachel Zacharias. The team is coached by Shannon Bigelow.
Silver medal winner was the team from Pulaski with members: Stephen Gorman, Ben Carguello, Brooke Whitaker, Mia Pierce, Cassie McGregor, Brandon Caufield, Daniel Hefti, Samantha Hefti, Mackenzie Mooney and Laura Torres. They are coached by Sandra McCullough.
Third place bronze finishers from Central Square, coached by Kaitlin Ginney, included team members: Haley Charter, Caleb Durant, Heidi Boettcher, Kelly Stropp, Jeanette Stewart, Taylor Converse, Lea Puig, Marissa Ackerman, Aerin Brizzi and Savannah Domachoske.
This marked the first of four competitions for OCAY League, the second is scheduled later this fall.
OCAY League was founded on the premise of academic excellence through competition.
OCAY League is coordinated through the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation’s Instructional Support Services Program.
