FULTON – No one can argue with the importance of regular exercise and activity for one’s health and wellbeing – at any age. Study after study supports the benefits of exercise, especially for older adults.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, almost all older people can benefit from additional physical activity. Regular exercise prevents chronic disease, improves mood and lowers chances of injury.
For adults who are isolated or are experiencing limitations due to a functional impairment such as a stroke, or cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia-related illnesses, the opportunity to engage in regular physical activities or exercise can be limited.
But thanks to a new program recently opened and now serving older adults in Oswego County, exercise and physical activities structured around social interaction is built right into the daily schedule.
“Our staff provides activities for older adults whose physical abilities are sometimes limited by medical conditions,” said Nicole Greenier, director of The Cornerstone Club social adult day program in Fulton. “And while some seniors have to go about exercise more carefully than others, they do not have to miss out on all the benefits. With proper instruction and guidance, like you would find in a day program, older adults can learn activities and exercises that improve mobility and strength.”
“Our regular activities includes structured exercise programs focused on reducing the risk of falls through improved balance and strength,” added Greenier, who noted that the risk of fall with a resulting injury is a leading cause of concern for the elderly and their family.
And the best way to engage older adults in exercise?
Greenier has found that group exercises promoting socialization helps increase the level of enjoyment and the level of participation.
“We know how important opportunities to socialize are for older adults who may be limited in their ability to get out and about, so we make group exercises a daily occurrence. But we also try to include movement in many of our daily activities whether they are group or individual; we want our members to reap all the benefits they can while they are with us,” she said.
Moreover, science supports the need for regular social activities as a way to keep oneself healthy physically and mentally.
Greenier encouraged those who have questions about social day services to contact her to arrange a free trial visit.
“We want to make sure those potential club members and their families are comfortable, so we encourage potential members to come and spend a day with us,” she said. “Take a tour and meet our staff and take part in our daily activities to see how we can meet your needs.”
