Cortland Beats SUNY Oswego With Second-Half Goals

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and went on to defeat Oswego, 3-1, in SUNYAC action Saturday night at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The win was Cortland’s third straight come-from-behind victory and improved their record to 3-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Lakers fell to 1-5-1 and 0-1 with the setback.

Seniors Patrick Meany (Delmar/Bethlehem) and Andrew Schwert (Buffalo/West Seneca East) and junior Lukas Wear (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) scored Cortland’s goals. Juniors E.J. Reutemann (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Brendan Wells (Wantagh/MacArthur) recorded assists. Senior goalie Patrick Pidgeon (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made three saves.

Junior Bryan Pacchiani (Cortlandt Manor/Lakeland) tallied the Lakers’ goal. Senior goalie Marcus LaRobardiere (Camden) registered four saves.

Oswego took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Pacchiani converted a penalty kick into the lower left of the goal after a Laker was tackled from behind in the box. Cortland had an excellent chance at the equalizer in the 39th minute, but LoRobardiere made a save right in front on Wear’s header on a corner kick.

The Lakers nearly made it a 2-0 game in the 50th minute when junior Max Guliani (New York/Millenium) fired a shot to the left post. Pidgeon made a diving save to prevent the score. Three minutes later, the Red Dragons tied the game as Meany bent a 25-yard direct kick around the Oswego wall and inside the left post.

Wear then netted the game winner in the 66th minute. After Meany sent a serve into the box on a corner kick, the ball bounced out to Wells who touched a shot toward the goal. Wear deflected the ball inside the right post.

The Lakers pressed for the tying goal and had a quality chance in the 87th minute, but Guliani’s bid from 18 yards out slid just wide of the left post. Moments later, Schwert sealed the win on a quick Cortland counter. Reutemann fed a long pass down the left side that sent Schwert in alone on LoRobardiere. Schwert deked to the right and chipped a shot into the open goal.
