OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball team fell 67-50 the Cortland Red Dragons Friday night in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers finished their season with an 8-17 record, two wins better than the previous season. Cortland finishes the regular season with a record of 20-5 and 14-4 in the SUNYAC.
In the first half, Cortland got off on an 8-0 run over the first 5:51 with head coach Tracy Bruno calling a timeout.
The Lakers would slowly start to come back, as guard Alisha Jacobs scored five unanswered points to bring the squad within three points.
By the 8:55 mark, Cortland had built up a 21-8 lead. The Lakers didn’t panic, however, with Jacobs coming to the rescue once again.
The freshman would give the Lakers 19 first-half points – 15 coming from downtown. Jacobs’s efforts resulted in a knotted 26-26 score with 3:24 remaining in the first.
A 10-0 Red Dragons run would cap the half, sending the Lakers into the locker room trailing 35-26.
The Lakers were unable to overcome the deficit, but flirted with a comeback as Courtney Ameele sunk a jump shot to bring Oswego within seven points with 12:10 left in regulation. Cortland constantly answered every Oswego basket, proving to be too much to overcome.
To cap the season off, the Lakers celebrated and honored seniors Lexi Gillard and Emily Birchall for their efforts and commitment to the team.
