Cortland eliminates Laker Men’s Soccer from playoff contention

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s soccer team (4-10-1, 3-5-1 SUNYAC) was unable to score in a must-win game at Cortland (8-7-1, 5-3-1 SUNYAC), and the Lakers were eliminated from State University of New York Athletic Conference playoff contention in a 1-0 loss on Saturday.

The Lakers rebounded from a 0-3-1 start in conference play, but were not able to sneak into the playoffs, as they needed at least a tie on Saturday.

Cortland’s Chris McBride scored the decisive goal in the 73rd minute on a give-and-go with Bryan Merlos. The Red Dragons tallied a goal in the second stanza, despite being outshot 9-7 in the period.

Oswego State fought furiously to tie the game, firing five shots in the final fifteen minutes of the game. However, the only shot on goal for the Lakers was saved by Cortland’s Tim Beauvais to preserve the shutout.

Laker goalie P.J. Goodwin (Sr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) registered four saves in the contest. Beauvais made three stops in the win.

The Lakers season came to an end on Saturday, despite drastically improving their conference record from a year ago, when they finished 0-8-1 and in last place. This year, the Lakers finished seventh in the SUNYAC, only one spot out of the postseason.
