OSWEGO, N.Y. – A ninth-inning grand slam sealed up a 9-1 SUNYAC win for conference-leading and 17th-ranked Cortland (18-6-1, 5-2 SUNYAC) over Oswego State (8-12, 1-3) on Tuesday at Laker Baseball Field.
Laker starter Kyler Miller (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) held the Red Dragons to single runs in the first three innings and then allowed nothing before leaving after six innings.
Meanwhile, the Oswego State offense stayed within striking range with a run in the fifth inning.
David Mazzullo (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) singled and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single through the right side by Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.). Ed Charles (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) brought in Mazzullo with a fly ball to right field.
Tyler Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) followed with a two-out single and John Rauseo (Fr., Mattituck, N.Y.) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. However, a first-pitch pop-up left the bases loaded and the Lakers still down 3-1. It was also the last time Oswego State had a base runner in the game.
Cortland added a run in the eight inning and then scored five times in the top of the ninth, including a grand slam to centerfield by Max Rosing.
Kyle Miller took the loss for the Lakers with two strikeouts and five walks in six innings, while Jon SIlva (Jr., Mexico, N.Y.) pitched two scoreless innings before loading the bases in the ninth inning.
Hamilton was the only Laker hitter with two hits in the game.
Oswego State continues a busy week of action, as it hosts non-conference St. Lawrence tomorrow at 3 p.m. for a nine-inning affair.
