OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team (10-14) was unable to match the firepower of 11th-ranked Cortland (25-2) in a straight-set loss (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) Wednesday night.
The Red Dragons hit a blazing .292 on 30 kills and just nine errors.
Oswego State’s Sabrina Sutton (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) and Stephanie Bailey (So., Scotia, N.Y.) pounded five kills each. Sutton also paced the squad with seven digs, while Stephany Olsheski (Sr., Brockport, N.Y.) and Kara Michelsen (So., Lake View, N.Y.) handed out a combined 19 assists. Ashley Coyle and Ava Hintz tallied eight kills apiece for the visitors, while setter Kristen Guercio fell one dig short of a double-double with 22 assists and nine digs.
The Lakers were within striking distance early in the first set until Natalie Zapcal sandwiched kills around an Ashley Coyle service ace to give Cortland a 14-9 advantage. The Red Dragons then scored 11 of the next 17 points, as another Zapcal kill ended the frame, 25-15.
With the score level at nine in the second set, an Oswego State service error started an 8-1 Cortland run fueled by a pair of Hintz service aces and a pair of Coyle kills to make the score 17-10. The Lakers pulled to within six points following a Jenna Sniffen (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) kill, but that was as close as the hosts would get in the stanza.
The Red Dragons utilized a 7-1 run early in the third set to distance them from Oswego State to cruise to the straight-set victory.
The Lakers play the final round of SUNYAC Pool Play this upcoming weekend with a pivotal match against Brockport on Friday at 6 p.m.
