SYRACUSE, NY – The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network are offering a unique two-day workshop for businesses, historic sites and museums that want to improve their visitor readiness experience.
The Cultural Heritage Familiarization Tour Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8 will include overnight lodging and visits to the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, the Chittenango Canal Boat Landing Museum, and the Seward House in Auburn.
“This hands-on mobile workshop is aimed at decision-makers, senior management and board members, staff, and volunteers who want to improve the ‘visitor readiness’ experience of their business, museum, historic or cultural site,” said Lori Solomon, director of Tourism Development and Marketing for the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “We invite anyone who is interested in educating their front-line and managerial staff in the importance of creating a quality visitor experience to attend.”
The cost is $45 for members of the New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network, and $55 for non-members, and includes the two-day mobile workshop, accompanying handouts, two lunches, property tours, motor coach transportation and lodging.
The workshop begins at 9 a.m. April 7 and concludes at 1:30 p.m. April 8. Monday night’s dinner and lodging gratuities are not included in the registration.
“We are able to keep the workshop cost affordable, thanks to the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services,” said Lynn “Spike” Herzig, chairman of the New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network. “The three museums that were selected represent a glimpse of the rich heritage assets that we have in New York State, and we appreciate their willingness to open their doors and share their knowledge and expertise with our cultural heritage tourism guests.”
Each site will present how their staff implements visitor readiness best practices in areas of hospitality and welcome, communication, orientation and planning for the future.
“The tour is designed to be very affordable and is a follow-up to the workshop that the network presented last fall in Syracuse,” said Solomon.

The New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network is a coalition of approximately 100 arts, culture and heritage attractions and venues from across New York State. The network developed New York State’s first ever inventory on arts, culture and heritage attractions, numbering more than 2,400 sites.
