Data: Oswego County Residents Among State’s Poorest

You probably didn’t need data to prove it, but there’s proof that Oswego County residents are among the poorest in the state.

Data from the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis shows county residents live in one of the ten counties that earn the least per capita income.

The data shows that per capita (meaning, per person) income in Oswego County was $29,695 in 2009.  The county ranks 54th in personal income, more than $4,000 per person less than the median state per capita income.

There is some positive news in the data.  Despite the strong recession and continued high unemployment, personal income has continued to rise in the county over the last four years.

Statewide, personal income fell from 2008 to 2009.  Most of the losses happened in the New York City area.  Income continued to rise upstate.

Oswego County residents earned $3.6 billion in 2009, according to the data.  That represented a 2.4% rise from 2008, the third-largest rise in the state.
