December 2014 Was Warmer Than Average But Less Snowy

OSWEGO, NY – December 2014 goes into the record book nearly 4 degrees warmer than average and below average snowfall.

The average temperature last month was 33.4 degrees. That is 3.7 degrees above average, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.

The highest temperature was 55 degrees on the 1st. There was a pair of 52-degrees at the end of the month, Gregway noted.

The lowest, 17, was recorded on the 2nd, 8th and 30th.

There were 3 days where the high was 50 degrees or warmer. It was in the 40s on 5 days.

Overnight lows dipped into the teens 4 times.

There were 18 days where the low was 32 degrees or colder. And, on 10 days, it never went below freezing, Gregway added.

Total precipitation for December 2014 came in at 3.84 inches. That is 0.04-inch higher than normal.

“The precipitation came in globs last month,” Gregway said.

The greatest amount of precipitation in a 24-hour period was over the 10th and 11th (0.83-inch).

“We also had 0.59-inch over the 16th and 17th,” Gregway said. “And, 0.81-inch pushed us over the top. Without that, we’d be way behind.

For the year, precipitation ended up at 38.87 inches. That is 4.06 inches below average.

“There were only 4 months with above average precip in 2014,” Gregway pointed out.

Snowfall, a bit surprisingly, was only 25.2 inches.

That is 8.3 inches below average.

The greatest snowfall over a 24-hour period was 13.2 inches on the 10th and 11th, Gregway said, adding that we closed the month with another 10 inches.

Total snowfall at the end of December was 42.3 inches. That is 0.7-inch below average.

Last month had 18 days of measurable precipitation, with streaks of 5 and 4 days in a row.

A trace was recorded on 6 days.

And, no precipitation fell on 7 days, with 3 being consecutive.

December had 1 day with snow pellets, 2 with ice pellets and 1 freezing rain.

The area received 15 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is 4 percentages below normal.

The number of cloudy days, 28, was 3 above average.

The number of partly cloudy days, 2, was 3 below average.

The number of clear days, 1, was average.

December saw 1 thunderstorm day, which is 1 above average.

There were no foggy days. That is 1 below average.

The highest barometric pressure was 30.74 on the 7th and the lowest was 29.27 on the 25th.

Strongest winds in December were also on the 25th, west-southwesterly at greater than 40 mph.

The warmest December is 2006 (37.0 degrees). Close behind is 1881 with 36.8 degrees.

The coldest is 1989 (16.2 degrees).

The highest temperature in December was 69 degrees on the 7th back in 1998. The coldest was -23 degrees on the 29th of 1933.

December 1878 holds the honor of being the wettest (10.50 inches) and the driest is a tie (1.02 inches) in 1876 and 1917.

The most snowfall came in December 1958 – 85.8 inches. December 1911 saw the least snow – 2.9 inches.
