Democratic Womens’ Group Arises

OSWEGO, NY – In the mid 1980s, a group of women actively organized into an advocacy and support group for women in political office.

The Democratic Action Women’s Network was organized and began its work to support women candidates for political office and support for womens’ issues.

DAWN sponsored visits from women candidates including Lieutenant Governor Mary Ann Krupsak and Senator Geraldine Ferraro. DAWN soon realized a large number of women participating as members  of the Oswego County Democratic Committee and women candidates for national and local political offices.

In March 2012, a small group of women wondered if there would be interest in activating this group.

To that end an informal meeting was held and substantial interest was expressed.

Women members of the Oswego County Democratic Committee and other women have resolved to rejuvenate DAWN to provide support for women Democratic candidates and support issues recognized as especially affecting women including women’s health.

The next meeting of DAWN will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Oswego County Democrat Headquarters, 157 W. Fifth St., Oswego.

All women interested in participating in the Democratic party, running for political office or supporting issues that support equal rights and women’s’ issues are invited to join us at this meeting and are urged to consider joining DAWN.
