Deputies Identify Victim from Fatal Motorcycle Accident

CICERO, NY – The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim in Friday’s (May 12) fatal motorcycle accident that occurred on Brewerton Road in the town of Cicero.

Deputies investigating the accident say the driver of the 2012 Kia SUV, Jaymie Gerlach, 35, of State Route 49, Oswego, was attempted to make a left turn onto Crabtree Lane from northbound Brewerton Road when she drove into the path of a southbound Harley Davidson motorcycle being operated by 51-year-old James Hotchkiss of Daphne Drive, North Syracuse.

Hotchkiss’ motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the SUV, throwing him from his motorcycle.

A nearby citizen, who saw the crash, rushed over and began performing CPR on Hotchkiss prior to emergency responders arriving.

Despite his efforts, Hotchkiss was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Gerlach, who was the sole occupant of the Kia, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Upstate University Hospital.

Brewerton Road between Crabtree Lane and Route 31 was closed for several hours as members of the Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team processed the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
