Located in the Industrial Park in Phoenix, Discovery Day Care opened its doors in 1995 and will be celebrating 13 years of operation this November.  The Center is NY State licensed and has capacity for 93 children, ages 18 months to 12 years.

Operated by Oswego County Opportunities, Discovery Day Care is open year round Monday thru Friday from 6:30am to 6:00pm and offers classrooms for toddlers (18 – 36 months), preschool (3 -4 years), and school age children (5 – 12 years).  According to Center Manager, Julie Boyd, Discovery Day Care’s philosophy is children learn best through hands-on activities and that parents are the most influential people in their child’s life.  “Our goal is to partner with the parents to provide early education and care.  We work hand in hand with parents so that there is consistency between what is happening at our center and at home,” explained Boyd.  Parents and staff communicate regularly about the children’s progress.  Parents participate in Parent/teacher conferences, field trips and special center activities.

Within the classrooms, the education staff at Discovery Day Care implements the High/Scope Curriculum, a hands-on approach where children can explore a safe, educational environment with adult support.  It allows them to learn through first hand experience and is based on the children’s development and interests.  Each classroom has established learning areas that provide experience in early literacy, math and science skills.

In addition to the classroom environment, the staff at Discovery Day Care focuses on developing the children’s independent and self-help skills as well as their social and emotional development.  Meals, which are low in fat, sodium and sugar, are prepared on site and served family style. Children learn to serve themselves, learn their food groups, proper manners and help with clean-up as well.

The Center includes three separate age appropriate playground areas: Toddlers, Preschool children and School Age children.  The grassy field areas allow for additional activities such as: soccer, kickball, kite flying and just running around.

Community presentations are an important part of the Discovery Day Care experience as special guests teach children about personal safety and other topics such as:

-         Clover the Cow and dairy foods from Cooperative Extension

-         Proper hand washing with Scrubby the Bear

-         Proper dental care from Small Smiles Dental

-         Fire Safety from the Fulton Fire Department

-         Caring for animals and an appreciation of nature with Jean Soprano and Isley the Owl from Kindred Kingdom

-         Seat Belt Safety with Buckle Bear

-         Bicycle/Helmet  Safety

-         The importance of exercise and proper nutrition

-         Handicap Diversity

In keeping with the importance of safety, staff members at Discovery Day Care are trained in CPR and First-Aid and each classroom has a staff member who is certified for medication administration.   Boyd, along with Center Assistant, Jackie Christian ensure that the children at Discovery Day Care have a safe and nurturing learning environment.

Over the years, Discovery Day Care has provided early education to more than 480 children.  The center is open year round and encourages parents to stop in anytime for a tour of the facility and discover first hand the services offered at Discovery Day Care.

The Center currently has limited openings in each age group.  For more information on Discovery Day Care or to register your child, you may call the office at 695-4838.
