PHOENIX, NY – Discovery Learning Center, located in the Oswego County Industrial Park off of Route 264 in Phoenix, opened its doors in November 1995, offering quality child care and a Head Start program.
That year, the center enrolled 5 day care and 17 Head Start children. Today, there are 39 child care and 54 Head Start slots.
Since opening 20 years ago, the center has expanded to offer school age care, a 6-hour Head Start class option and has been collaborating with the Phoenix School District to offer Universal Pre-K for the past nine years.
Discovery Learning Center is operated by Oswego County Opportunities, Inc., who is celebrating 50 years of serving Oswego County residents.
Center manager Julie Boyd, has been there for nearly 18 years and has seen the changes and growth first-hand.
“It has been amazing to see the expansion and growth of the center over the years. I have been here long enough to see former students come in now as parents. They love seeing all of the class photos on the wall and to be able to point themselves out as a young child,” she said.
The class photos will be on display throughout the building during the 20th anniversary open house, which will be held on June 1 from 6 – 7:30 p.m.
There will be activities in each classroom for children to engage in, information for parents on health, nutrition & safety, child fingerprinting from Operation Safe Child, OCO Navigator (health insurance), information about our center’s programs and much more.
There will also be face painting for children by Leanna and refreshments for all.
Each child will receive a brand new storybook.
This event is open to the public.
