Donald J. “Toby” Torbitt Sr., 79, a resident of Ridge Rd, Oswego, passed away June 8, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Raymond J. and Dorothy (Buske) Torbitt.

Donald was a Safety Officer for the New York State OMRDD and prior to that he worked for 15 years at Shapiro Motors and Nettle Ford. He was a member of the American Legion 268 and VFW 5885 in Oswego.

He was an Air Force veteran and served during the Korean War.

He enjoyed restoring cars, bowling, snowmobiling, camping, traveling, and especially spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn (Taber) Torbitt; his daughter, Donna M. (Richard R.) Somers of Scriba; his son, Donald J. “Toby” (Linda) Torbitt Jr. of Oswego, his brothers Ray (Alice) Torbitt of Marathon, NY, William “Bill” (Joanne) Torbitt of Oswego, and Larry (Ester) Torbitt, of PA; his sisters, Barbara Torbitt of Canandaigua and Doreen Torbitt of Cortland; four grandchildren, Brenda Torbitt, Nichole Torbitt, Chuck Torbitt, and Casey Collins; and four great-grandchildren, Emily Gillette, Tyler Torbitt-Meyers, Carley Torbitt, and Cole Torbitt.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Jack Torbitt and his granddaughter, Shannon Collins.

Funeral Services will be held 9a.m. Saturday, at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 West Albany, St., Oswego. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held 4-7p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

  1. Marilyn and Family, we were so sorry to read about Toby. He certainly was a nice man. I always enjoyed talking with him when we came over to your house. You know you are in our thoughts and prayers and hope to see you soon. We all miss you.
