Donald J. Goewey


OSWEGO, NY – Donald J. Goewey passed suddenly on Father’s Day, Sunday June 21, 2015, at SUNY Upstate Hospital, Syracuse.

Mr. Goewey was widely known in the Oswego community as an educator, volunteer, child advocate and family man.

Mr. Goewey was born in Oswego, on October 21, 1926, to Kate Goewey.

After graduating from Oswego High School, Mr. Goewey served in the United States Army during World War II in 1945.

He trained at Fort Croft, South Carolina, as an infantry rifleman and later served in the Philippines.

He was aboard the USS Pickaway on the sea to Okinawa for the Army occupation when the war ended.

It was then that he wrote to his mother to tell her that he decided to return to Oswego, go to college and become a teacher.

Mr. Goewey married Leona Fobert in 1948 and they were parents to eight children.

Mr. Goewey graduated from the Oswego State Teacher’s College in 1950.

He taught in Utica, Fulton, Morrisville and Red Creek before settling into his education career in Oswego in 1959.

Mr. Goewey was an algebra teacher at Kingsford Park School before being appointed principal of Charles E. Riley Elementary School in 1966.

Mr. Goewey loved Riley School, where he served as principal for 20 years until his retirement.

The 1989 addition at Riley School was dedicated by the school district in his name.

Mr. Goewey served as a member of the Oswego City School District Board of Education in the late 1980s.

Mr. Goewey was a counselor at the prestigious “Boys’ State” at Colgate University in 1953 and 54, teaching mathematics.

In 1955, Mr. Goewey was awarded a War Service Regents Scholarship for graduate studies.

He completed a Master’s Degree in mathematics at Colgate University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from SUNY Oswego.

Mr. Goewey completed his doctoral studies at Syracuse University with a focus on literacy and leadership.

Mr. Goewey was a volunteer and child advocate.

As a past president of the Oswego Kiwanis, he was heavily involved in the Special Olympics.

He was the founder of the Oswego Teachers Employees Federal Credit Union.

He is also a founding member of the Port City Educational.

Mr. Goewey was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Leona Goewey; his daughter, Debbie-Goewey-King; his mother; and sisters, Dorothy Goewey and Grace Cloonan.

He is survived by seven children, Donna Goewey of Springfield Va., Denise Goewey of Oswego, Donald Jr. (Chris) of Virginia, Deanna (Marc) Brown, David (Colleen) Goewey, Dr. Dean (Linda) Goewey and Dorrie Goewey, all of Oswego.

Mr. Goewey, known as “Father” to his family and friends, leaves dozens of beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, friends and the community.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from St.Mary’s Church.

Entombment will be in All Saints Mausoleum.

Friends may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charles and Mary Haney Fund, 140 W. Sixth St., Suite 110, Oswego NY 13126.

    I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Mr Goewey was my principle all through Riley school. He was a very nice gentleman. May God help you find peace in your time of sorrow.

    Don was a true friend, he will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, the world will be a smaller place without him.
