Dorothea Mae Smithers, 91, a resident of 133 W. Cayuga St. Oswego, passed away June 19, 2008 at the Manor of Seneca Hill.
Born June 2, 1917, Miss Smithers was the daughter of the late Homer G. Smithers and Mae (Byington) Smithers Wilcox of Mexico, N.Y.
A native of Mexico, N.Y., she was a graduate of the Mexico Academy and Central School, the Central City Business Institute, Syracuse, N.Y., and the State University College at Oswego, N.Y.
She had been employed by the Social Security Administration, Oswego, N.Y. and retired in 1978 as a Data Review Technician after 22 years of service.
A member and past Deacon of the Faith United Church and its predecessor, the Presbyterian Church, Oswego, Miss Smithers was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the National Daughters of the American Revolution, the Oswego County Historical Society, the Heritage Foundation, the Harbor Brook Home Bureau, the Oswego Town Senior Citizens, and the Palermo Grange from which she obtained her 50-year Golden Sheaf Grange membership certificate in 1980.
She was Secretary and Treasurer of the Mexico Primitive Cemetery Association for many years, and also a volunteer with the Oswego Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Surviving include a sister, Mrs. Doris (Smithers) McNee of Ridgefield, Connecticut; five nephews, a niece, several cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Robert C. Smithers in October 1983.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego, with Rev. Roger Martin officiating.
Calling hours will be held 4-7 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Mexico Primitive Cemetery, Mexico, N.Y.
