Dr. Owen E. (Ernie) Pittenger, 85, of 90 Ellen Street, Oswego, New York passed away on November 19, 2011.
Born in Hammond Indiana, he was the son of Owen L. and Clara B. Pittenger. Dr. Pittenger earned his doctorate in educational psychology at the University of Illinois and went on to be a professor of psychology at the State University College at Oswego for 35 years.
He was a school psychologist, had a private practice, worked at Rome State School with special needs children, and worked extensively with NYSARC. He also acted as an evaluative consultant for the Department of Social Services Office of Disability Determinations, and had a consulting practice for several nuclear plants including Nine Mile and Fitzpatrick.
He authored one book, co-authored another, and wrote several professional publications as well. Dr. Pittenger was a life member of Kappa Delta Pi, a member and president of Phi Delta Kappa, and a vice president and president of the Association of Academic Psychologists of New York State.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty D. Pittenger, stepmother Winnell Pittenger and stepsister Brenda Lackey of Tullahoma TN and five children; Jeanette (David) Kratz of Camillus, NY, Sandra (Nick) Christiantelli of Cotopaxi, CO, Robert (Dee) of Hemet, CA, and William (Tammy) of Oswego, NY, and Jenine (Daniel) Pedersen of Garner, NC as well several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
