OSWEGO, NY – “Dr. Richards and the Ugly Tie†could be the title of a new children’s book.
However, the real story is that Riley Elementary School Principal Dr. Randy Richards has a tremendous collection of ugly ties.
Recently, Riley Home and School Association representatives conducted a unique fundraiser which they hoped would bring in a few dollars to benefit events and programs.
Betsy Gazda, co-president of the CER Home and School Association said, “We provided each classroom with a plain tie. The class was given one week to decorate it as ugly as possible. The ties were displayed and children could vote for the ugliest tie by placing change in a container.
The reward for the students was Dr. Richards wearing the “ugliest tie†for one week.
Classrooms enthusiastically embraced the project and Terri Cullen-Stacy’s first graders had the prize winner.
Cullen-Stacey noted, “The first graders brainstormed many ideas and then came up with a one through five concept. The numbers were placed on the tie and one leaf, two stale pieces of bread, three freeze dried crickets, four plastic eyes and five meal worms were glued on.â€Â
Wearing a huge smile Richards said, “The first graders were really excited about this. In fact I don’t think any of them had any change left at home as they stuffed the ballot box. They loved it and are still excited about me wearing their award winning ugly tie.â€Â
The principal was so excited about the project that he has all of the ugly ties in his office and plans on wearing them from time to time during the school year.
He noted that he understands the meaning for the students to see him wearing ties that they worked so hard to prepare.
