MEXICO – The shelves at the Mexico Food Pantry are a little more full thanks to the Oswego County Department of Social Services Employee Hospitality Group, who collected more than $310 as well as several boxes of food to benefit the pantry.
The effort was spearheaded by DSS Hospitality Group president Autumn Mintonye.
“I know that the food pantry here in Mexico has been struggling to keep their shelves stocked and I thought that if we collected money and food leading up to our annual Halloween celebration that we could make a difference” said Mintonye.
DSS employees could donate food items or money in exchange for the option to wear jeans on October 28.
Mexico Food Pantry Coordinator Martha Sturtz said, “The donation from the DSS Hospitality Group was absolutely wonderful and it was perfect timing, we really needed it right then. The past two months we have had to close for a week each month because we didn’t have enough food to give out.”
The Mexico Food Pantry serves residents in the Mexico School District, averages 120 families a month and spends an average of $3,000 monthly on food from Food Bank of CNY.
The Mexico Food Pantry relies on donations such as the one received by the DSS Hospitality Group and grants.
The pantry is located in the basement of St. Anne, Mother of Mary Church, 3352 Main St.
To donate, or if you are in need, the pantry can be reached at (315) 963-7182 and online at www.mexicofoodpantry.com
Hours of operation are Monday 1 – 3 p.m. and Wednesday 5 – 7 p.m.
The DSS Hospitality Group is an entirely employee run and funded organization that hosts events for DSS employees.
