MEXICO – The Oswego County Department of Social Services will temporarily re-locate to the former Cayuga Community College facility on state Route 3, west of Fulton, in mid-December.
The offices at 100 Spring St., Mexico, will close at noon Dec. 14.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 18, DSS services will be located at the former community college building at 806 W. Broadway, Fulton.
The Mexico office building will be closed for asbestos abatement and repairs until early May 2013.
Office hours and all phone numbers for DSS will remain the same, said Gregg Heffner, Commissioner of Social Services. Public transportation bus routes will not be affected by the move.
“People will still be able to pick up the Oswego County public transportation service at the Mexico DSS office. However, they will need to wait in the sheltered area of the building outside of the front doors,” said Heffner.
The staff of the county Buildings and Grounds and Central Services departments will assist movers from Greater Syracuse Moving and Storage in moving files, office supplies, computer equipment and furniture.
The move will be phased in from Dec. 12 through 15. DSS offices will be closed Dec. 17, for staff to unpack and set up their work spaces. Services will resume at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 18 at the Fulton location.
Oswego County Administrator Philip Church announced in March that testing revealed asbestos levels above the federal limit were present in ceiling tiles in the older part of the Mexico building.
The ceiling tiles pose no health threat unless they are damaged or moved.
However, the tiles must frequently be moved to access the building’s mechanical and communications systems.
After considering several options, the County Legislature decided to replace all old ceiling tiles and complete other repairs in the DSS building. It is expected that the project will be completed in early May.
