Early Hole Too Deep For Oswego State Field Hockey Team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Houghton (2-2) built a two-goal lead in the first ten minutes, and never looked back as the Highlanders defeated the Oswego State field hockey team (1-4), 4-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Colleen Sullivan got the visitors off on the right foot when she scored the contest’s first goal and assisted the second to gain control of the game. She found the back of the cage on a scramble in front at the 4:10 mark, and later found teammate Adria Bridgwood open in front to put the visitors ahead 2-0.

The Lakers cut the deficit in half just before the end of the frame when Ashley Fiorelle (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) hit Taylor Stein (Sr., Endwell, N.Y.) with a pass on the left post for the one-time shot.

Play went back-and-forth to start the second half, as Oswego State tried to level the match. However, Ashley Engle connected with Maesa Phongsamouth on two nearly identical plays to put the game out of reach. Engle dribbled into the arc before throwing a shot towards the cage, where Phongsamouth was in position to deflect the ball past the Laker keeper.

Nicole Moccaldi (Fr., East Islip, N.Y.) suffered the loss as she stopped two of the four shots on goal in the first half for Oswego State. Grace Lombardi (Fr., Ossining, N.Y.) tallied similar numbers, as she allowed two goals on five shots. Hillery Duman posted the win for Houghton with zero saves.

The Lakers return to action on Friday when they face the Hawks in New Paltz at 4 p.m.
