LAWRENCE, Mass. — Edward N. Garno, 72, of Lawrence, Mass., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, in a hospital in Lowell, Mass., after a long illness.
Ed was born and raised in Oswego, by his late parents Harold (Hap) and Esther (Mick) Garno. He attended Oswego schools and graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1961. He also received his master’s degree from Albany State.
Ed worked as an administrator in the Hudson New York school district before returning to Oswego.
He first worked as the personnel director and then became the Oswego School District Superintendent, a position he held until retirement. He was a popular administrator and always showed the students how much he cared about them by attending their activities regularly.
While living in Oswego, he was an active Rotarian and an energetic member of the YMCA.
In addition to his parents Ed was predeceased by his brother, Harold (Tom) Garno.
He is survived by his children, Edward “Ned” Garno, of Lawrence, Mass. and Catherine (Phillip) Evans, of Dallas, Texas; brother, Kenneth (Jody) Garno, of Syracuse; sister, Peg (Mac) McKinstry, of Oswego; three grandchildren Benjamin, Paige and Devin Evans, of Dallas, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Feb. 25, at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Church, 240 W. First St., Oswego.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Oswego YMCA, 265 W. First St., Oswego.
