OSWEGO, NY – A deserving Oswego High School music student will be rewarded annually as the result of the newly instituted Edward S. Lisk “Medal of Distinction.”
Lisk, for decades, has provided the school district and community with unparalleled work as a musical pioneer.
He as been a fierce advocate for the arts in education not only in Oswego, but in hundreds of communities nationwide. He has lectured tens of thousands of band directors, school administrators, college student, conductors, musicians and community members about the importance music plays in the development of every child.
His tireless efforts supporting music education have made him one of the most sought-after lecturers, clinicians and conductors in the nation.
Bill Palange, one of the key organizers of the “Medal of Distinction,” said, “Ed has had an incredible impact on the lives of thousands of students while bringing a positive awareness of our school district and community to every corner of our country.”
Palange continued, “Ed brought a positive face to our school district and the community that supported it. He is a man with a unique vision, a master teacher, a supremely gifted musician, conductor, author and champion for music and its undeniable impact on young people. Mr. Lisk is surely a ‘jewel’ in the crown of our community.”
A native of Oswego and graduate of OHS he has continued to bring recognition to his hometown.
His contributions have resulted in the creation of an award and scholarship bearing his name.
The Edward S. Lisk “Medal of Distinction” will be awarded annually to an outstanding graduating senior in the Oswego High School band program.
The award, which Lisk will present for the first time on June 1, includes a beautiful medallion and Swarovski crystal as well as a $1,000 scholarship check.
The $1,000 annual scholarship will be generated solely from donations received from alumni, colleagues, businesses, friends, and community members who appreciate the significant contributions Lisk made to the school district, students and community, as well as every person past and present who values music in our schools.
Palange stressed that, “One hundred percent of the donations to the Edward S. Lisk ‘Medal of Distinction’ are used for the scholarship.”
Contributions to sustain the award and scholarship program can be achieved in two ways.
The Oswego High School bands’ website http://oswegobands.org/index.html has a donation area.
Checks can also be sent and made payable to the OHS Band Parents Association with a note signifying “Medal of Distinction” and they can be mailed to Edward S. Lisk “Medal of Distinction” Foundation, c/o William Palange, 304 E. Ninth St., Oswego NY 13126.
In closing Palange noted, “It’s important for us to recognize our own heroes. This award is fittingly named for the man whose vision, dedication, leadership and tireless effort laid the groundwork for the outstanding music program that exists today.”
