Since last fall, Emily has been collecting shampoo, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, lotion, razors, shave cream, baby shampoo, hair combs/brushes, baby powder and other items to aid area homeless or nearly homeless individuals or families in need.

Emily said she “is very excited about this!”

“I am so touched by the continued community support that I recieve. I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that has supported me! ” she added. “Yes, we are still making bags as donations come in.”

The need in the county is still great.

Oswego County Opportunities’ homeless programs have already distributed more than 70% of the bags Emily’s Mission has donated to those in need.

Emily’s Mission is asking for people heading out for spring break vacations to collect their hotel soaps and shampoos and donate them.

There is a donation box at the Fulton Public Library, you can contact Emily through her facebook page, Emily’s Mission or email [email protected] for pickup.

COACH, County of Oswego Advocates Challenging Homelessness, a newly formed coalition to combat homelessness, includes representatives from Oswego County’s human service agencies, local elected officials, concerned community members and government officials.

The committee works to raise the awareness of, and find effective ways to address, the issue of homelessness in Oswego County.

Emily is working with COACH’s sub-housing committee on opening a shelter.

Emily has also been named honorary chairperson of OCO’s 12th annual Bowl-A-Fun tournament.

She has vowed to be the face and the voice of homeless people and has been meeting with government, school and community leaders to shine a light on this crisis.

“We are very excited to have Emily serve as our honorary chairperson for this year’s event, the ‘Lucky 13’ Bowl-A-Fun,” said Diane Cooper-Currier, executive director of Oswego County Opportunities. “The event takes place on April 13, at Lakeview Lanes in Fulton. Emily has increased awareness about the growing problem of homelessness and the need for a shelter in Oswego County.”

Funds raised at the “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun will benefit OCO’s services and programs that help the county’s homeless. In addition, a percentage of the proceeds will be set aside to build financial resources for the future.

“A homeless shelter is desperately needed. There are hundreds of homeless people in the Oswego area alone,” Cooper-Currier said.

The Bowl-A-Fun takes place from noon – 6 p.m.

Registration is under way for five-person teams, with choice of flights: noon – 2:30 p.m. or 3 – 5:30 p.m.
