FULTON – Hogwarts comes to The Art Scene of Fulton, NY with an uproarious satire of the blockbuster J.K. Rowling series
We’ve all heard of The Boy Who Lived. His trials, his tribulations. His hero’s journey from boy to man over the course of seven books. But, how many of us know the story of Wayne Hopkins?
“Puffs”, written by Matt Cox, presents the story of Harry Potter through the lens of one of the other houses in Hogwarts: the Hufflepuffs. Known as “Puffs” for short, the play explores what it’s like to be in the shadow of greatness and how being simply “good” is sometimes better than being “great”.
Wayne wants desperately to get out of the shadow of his classmate Harry Potter. But, at the same time, he admires Potter. All the intrigue, drama and adventure that comes with being Potter, Wayne wants for himself. Wayne wants desperately to be the main character and the play explores the responsibility of such a role.
First and foremost, this play is a must of Potter fans. Writer Cox and director Joshua DeLorenzo know the lore inside out, allowing even casual fans into this alternate take. The ensemble cast, lead by Michael King, Rosalind Sowan and Don Crowe, create a culture of camaraderie as the natural analog to the heroic trio from the Harry Potter series. The three actors have many different tones to juggle throughout the show, excelling at each.
The supporting ensemble each has their own moment in the play to shine, giving what could have been one-dimensional jokes full characters for the audience to identify with. Once the second act begins, we’re fully invested in the ragtag group of Puffs and their charming portrayals.
So, ready your wand, grab a mug of Butterbeer and avoid those booger flavored jellybeans while watching the famous Harry Potter saga from third place with the “Puffs”!
