‘The Laramie Project’ Coming to GRB Stage

FULTON, NY – Quirk’s Players of Fulton’s G. Ray Bodley High School are placing finishing touches on their fall, 2012 production, The Laramie Project.

The production will be staged on October 26 and 27 in the Bodley Auditorium.

Curtain time is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets will be available at the door.

The Laramie Project is rated ‘PG-13’ for situations and language and is intended for mature audiences.

“The Laramie Project was written by Moisés Kaufman and the Techtonic Theatre Group in 1998 following the brutal kidnapping, beating and murder of 21-year old University of Wyoming College Student Matthew Shepard,” explained Tom Briggs, Fulton teacher and Theatre Director at G. Ray Bodley High School. “It is based on months of interviews with the residents of Laramie, Wyoming, theatre members’ journal entries and news reports that chronicle how an entire community reacts to such a heinous crime.”

Briggs said that the production is quite moving and that The Laramie Project is one of the most performed plays in America today.

“The Laramie Project is a departure from our normal light-hearted fall productions,” Briggs said. “We felt the message that it sends – advocating peace and acceptance – is extremely important, especially in light of the new Dignity For All Students Act which became law in New York State this past July.”

Briggs added that “our students have done a remarkable job with the serious tone of this production and are presenting their characters in a most mature manner.”

The cast for The Laramie Project features a combination of veteran and new actors in Quirk’s Players.

Appearing in the production are Fulton students  Zoe Bolio, Logan Carvey, Lille Cooper, Kennedie Coyne, Brad Crofoot, Daniel DeStevens, Abby Field, Kyla Freeman, Markus Harter, Kayla Hatch, Paige Havener, Jeremy Herlowski, Stephen Heywood, Mikaela Houck, Kaitlyn Kinney, Danni Kline, Robbie Lagowski, Mitchell Lalik, Vanessa Langdon, Alex LaRock, Ray Luis, Maranda Mattiaccio, Steven McDougall, Mark Parry, Alexis Pawlewicz, Laura Perwitz, Bayley Raponi, Lacey Rusaw, Jessica Suphan, Christina Teetsel, Grace Trepasso, Amanda Trombly and Brandon Webb.

Additionally, GRB/Quirk’s Players graduates Joe Medico, Troy Lund, Matt Tarbell and Nick Pike appear in the production as does Dan Sherman, a teacher at Fairgrieve Elementary.

Quirk’s Players is the student theatre troupe at G. Ray Bodley High School.

Named in memory of William Quirk, a long time English teacher and drama director at both Fulton High School and G. Ray Bodley High School, the group presents two main productions a year and participates in at least one interscholastic drama festival.

Most recently Quirk’s Players presented Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Odd Couple last fall and upbeat Broadway musical Damn Yankees this past spring.
