Several Fairgrieve Elementary School fifth graders were recently notified that their poems have been selected to be published in the 2018 Young American Poetry Digest.
Students from throughout the country submitted their literary work, and while not every entry received the honor, nearly one dozen Fairgrieve Falcons are now set to have their work forever celebrated in print.
Katrina Sutton, fifth grade teacher, received a letter from the YAPD, which detailed why the National Schools Project had shared the youth’s talents with others.
Poems were selected by a panel of people who judged the work based on creativity, age-appropriate language, sensory/figurative images, structure and poetic technique.
Examples of some of the published work are:
“Fall” by Joseph Cortini
Upon the red leaves
Falling from the blue cloudy
Sky how colorful
“Wild Horses” by Savannah Mirabito
See the horses run
The wind blows their long, straight hair
Splashing in the sun
“Raindrop” by Jayce Wornick
Raindrop clean and clear
Landing on my umbrells
Falling on my tongue
