Fairgrieve Elementary’s top two spellers in grades four through six will advance to the 2012 Post Standard/WCNY Spelling Bee to be held this January.
The winners this year are 1st place -Justin Hatch, 2nd place – Ariel Stacy, and 3rd place -Madison Lang.
The local students will join about 175 students from 45 school districts and home-school associations in taking a written spelling test at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
The top 35 spellers will move on to an oral bee in February, with the winner granted an expense paid trip for two to Washington, DC to take part in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee held later in the school year.
Approximately 70 Fairgrieve students began preparing for the spelling bee in early November by studying from a book containing words, tips, and tricks for spelling bee success.
The number of participants was narrowed down following two written tests, and a final oral spell-down.
