OSWEGO – Sarah Hadcock’s first grade classroom at Leighton Elementary School was full of treats, not tricks, during a recent academic activity all about pumpkins.

During Hadcock’s writing groups, students were fascinated with the combined literacy and science lesson when they learned the life cycle of a pumpkin: seed to sprout, vine and blossom, start out as tiny green pumpkin and as they grow they may change to shades of darker green, orange, white, red or blue.

Students took turns reading out loud excerpts from their Scholastic Weekly Reader to reveal components of pumpkins: flesh, pulp, seeds, shell and stem.

The first graders also were able to see, smell and touch each pumpkin part.

“Eww, that’s disgusting!” one student said after she touched the pumpkin flesh.

After Hadcock talked about cooked, yummy pumpkin snack ideas, she gifted each student a miniature white pumpkin to take home.
