The Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office is reporting an increase in training and income for the Oswego County Emergency Response Training Center. So far this year, training is up 265 percent over 2009 figures and income is more than 300 percent. This is double the anticipated increase for the year.
“We’ve had many companies return to the center for training this year, including the Entergy Fitzpatrick plant, Constellation Emergency plant, Novelis, Sithe and 16 fire departments,†said Oswego County Fire Coordinator Donald Forbes. “We’ve also added several new groups such as the Constellation Nine Mile Point Fire Brigade, Entergy Vermont plant, Sunoco Fulton Ethanol Plant, Oswego County BOCES public safety class, and 20 additional fire departments.â€
The Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office is also involved with state training, local fire response and the implementation of a new radio system with the Oswego County E-911 Office and Oswego County Emergency Medical Services.
The training center is located at 720 East Seneca Street in Oswego and contains 20 specialized props for live fire training in a variety of challenging conditions. They include interior structural, pit, flammable liquid, motor vehicle and transformer fires, as well as a sprinkler lab and electrical grid demonstration.
Day, evening and weekend classes are available and all courses are customized to meet the training needs of each individual company. Special attention is given to water stream and fire extinguisher use, confined space rescue evolutions, tabletop tactics and incident command. Classroom instruction accommodates up to 75 students.
“In addition to conducting training programs for fire departments and industries, the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office also organizes mutual aid services and conducts cause and origin investigations for local fire departments.†said Legislator Linda Lockwood, chair woman of the Oswego County Legislature’s Public Safety and Emergency Services Committee. “The office serves as a liaison between county government and the Fire Advisory Board, County Chief’s Association, Firefighter’s Association, Fire and Police Association, HazMat Team, Underwater Rescue and Recovery Team and Rope Rescue Team.â€
