Firefighters Battle West Mohawk Street Blaze; A Child is Dead


On Saturday July 13, at approximately 8:42 p.m. Oswego City Fire and Police units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 70 W. Mohawk St. in the city of Oswego.

The first responding units arrived within two minutes and reported fire on the first floor of the structure.

Smoke and flames were visible from the first floor of the two-family residence, according to Jeff McCrobie, fire chief.

An interior search resulted in firefighters locating a 3-year-old boy in an upstairs bedroom who was removed from the residence and transported to Oswego Hospital.

The child has been identified as Jeremiah Haskins.

Haskins was taken to Oswego Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to city police reports.

The other occupants of the residence were able to get out on their own and no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by The city of Oswego Cause and Origin Team. The investigation is ongoing.

On scene was the Oswego Police Department, Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, Menter Ambulance as well as Oswego Fire Department.


UPDATE 10:55 p.m.  There are unconfirmed reports that a young child has died. There has been no official word regarding the extent of injuries as a result of the fire.

OSWEGO – At least one person has reportedly been injured in a house fire on Oswego’s westside tonight (July 13).

Authorities say the fire is on West Mohawk Street. The home is located between West Fifth and Sixth streets. It is a two-family dwelling.

The blaze was reported at about 8:45 p.m.

Firefighters were still on the scene as of 10 p.m.
