Oswego, May 1, 2010 — The Oswego YMCA “Friends for Life†Respite Program held it’s first ever Formal Dance. Dozens of local teens gathered at the Oswego YMCA Armory for a night of dancing and fun. The teens were an integral part of the planning process and chose an “Under the Sea†theme.
The formal was held for local teens with disabilities that may not have other opportunities to attend a school prom. The formal had plenty of music, food, and photo keepsakes with the wonderful support of local businesses, C’s Farm’s, Center Stage Photography and Noble’s Flower Gallery of Baldwinsville.
The Respite Program provides recreational and fitness activities to individuals with disabilities that reside with family members in Oswego County. The activities are designed to provide proper supports for inclusion into existing YMCA programs such as swim lessons, basketball, School’s Out, Camp Ontario, water aerobics and fitness classes. Various activities and events in Oswego County and Central New York are scheduled throughout the year to promote community integration and socialization skills. The most popular events are bowling, movies, baseball games and trips to the zoo.
Assessment and diagnosis documentation is required to determine program eligibility. Referrals must be received from Medicaid Service Coordinators. For further information contact Meg Henderson, Respite Director at 343-1981 or [email protected]
