The American Red Cross New York Penn Region serves 63 counties in two states.Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â In this Region we serve over 120 hospital including 13 major trauma centers as well as metro and rural hospitals.Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â Each blood donation is comprised of three components; red blood cells, plasma and platelets.Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â Each of these components helps in a different way to save lives.Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â An automobile accident victim can use up to 40 units of blood, a heart transplant surgery uses 4 ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ 6 units of red blood cells, the average adult open heart surgery uses 2 ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ 6 units of red blood cells AND 2 ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ 4 units of plasma AND 1 ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ 10 units of platelets.Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â These examples show the ongoing need for blood in our Region.
