Community members and organizations came together to sponsor and support the first-ever Parents of Special Children Inc. (PSC) Backyard Barbeque & Family Festival on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Barclay Douglaston Manor Farm.
“About 45 families were given the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts, face painting, balloon animals, music, dancing, see a race car and emergency vehicle displays and win prizes for free thanks to the sponsors, donors, and organizers who helped make the event possible,†said Chrystal Hoyt, PSC program coordinator and organizer of the event. “Seeing the joy and happiness the barbeque brought to the families and children was remarkable,†Hoyt said. “This would not have been possible without the countless efforts put forth by all of our sponsors, volunteers and families.â€
Hoyt said that she was especially grateful to former U.S. Ambassador H. Douglas and his wife, DeeDee Barclay, and their son, NY State Assemblyman Will Barclay, who volunteered, donated, and hosted the event at their estate. Will Barclay hoped the event would help strengthen the network of parents and children who face daily challenges in caring for and raising children with special needs.
“It was rewarding to help bring together families and children,†said sponsor Roy Clark, Dunkin’ Donuts’ Oswego County franchise co-owner. “I was delighted to be given the opportunity to help with the event, and we’re all working together to make this even better next year.â€
PSC, located in Fulton New York, is a nonprofit organization funded by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD), private donations and local fund raising efforts. According to their mission statement, Parents of Special Children Inc. are committed to improving the quality of everyday life of special needs families. They provide families with support reimbursement for respite, an education resource program, and most recently an autism connections support group.
Saturday’s event brought families together for a day of fun activities and bonding between parents and children.
Hoyt thanked all of the agencies and individuals that made the event such a success, including Mr. and Mrs. H. Douglas Barclay, Will Barclay, Dunkin’ Donuts, Burritt Motors, Candlelight Quilters, Eastern Shore Associates Insurance, Entergy Nuclear, Fulton Savings Bank, Huhtamaki, Mitchell’s Speedway Press, Oswego County Federal Credit Union, Pathfinder Bank, Rich & Gardner Construction, and Chris Nelson State Farm Insurance.
