OSWEGO – Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (March 22) he has appointed Frank Clavelli Jr. as chairman of the City of Oswego Zoning Board of Appeals.

Clavelli, a Democrat, previously represented the Second Ward as a city councilor, and was appointed in 2009 to the Zoning Board of Appeals by Mayor Randy Bateman.

The Zoning Board meets monthly at City Hall, tasked with vetting proposed development projects and ensuring the city zoning code is followed consistently.

The city of Oswego is currently in the midst of a comprehensive re-write of the existing zoning code, gearing up for a final vote and implementation in the next two weeks.

“Frank Clavelli has been a steady hand on the zoning board since 2009 and does an outstanding job asking the appropriate questions and being totally objective and fair to each and every project that comes before the board for consideration,” said Mayor Barlow. “He is pro-business and pro-development and has been totally supportive of my administration’s efforts to revitalize downtown and strengthening our neighborhoods. Mr. Clavelli has the respect of his colleagues on the board and has the experience to assist my administration with maintaining our current momentum.”

Clavelli thanked Mayor Barlow for being appointed chairman and said, “Iā€™m a lifelong resident of the city and have a vested interest in our community. I love the city of Oswego. I feel the city is going in a great direction and I hope my leadership on the Zoning Board of Appeals will foster continued growth in our city and maintain quality within our neighborhoods.”

Clavelli will take over for outgoing chairwoman Susan Sweet, tasked with running the monthly zoning meetings and presiding over the seven-member board appointed by the mayor.

Clavelli and Barlow are former political opponents from 2013 when they ran against each other for a seat on the Common Council to represent the city’s Fifth Ward.

Clavelli is the son of the late Frank Clavelli Sr., a 20-year city councilor in the city of Oswego.
