FREDONIA, N.Y. – Nikki Liadka (Jr., Liverpool, N.Y.) scored the lone goal late in the game, as the Oswego State women’s soccer team (5-5-0, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) fell 3-1 to Fredonia (8-2-1, 2-1-1 SUNYAC) on Friday.
The first period started off with the ball going back-and-forth between the teams without any scoring.
However, nearly 38 minutes into the game, the Blue Devils scored on a Katie Kleine goal with an assist by Kristi Putzig. The goal was scored on a turnover deep inside the Laker box. Emily Varonier (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.) dove for the ball, but was unable to make the save.
Less than three minutes after the first Fredonia goal, the home team scored again to take a 2-0 lead. Putzig took a shot that went above Varonier’s head, resulting in the goal.
Oswego State became more aggressive in the second half, taking 19 out of its 25 total shots. The Blue Devils scored again at the 68-minute mark on a goal by Laura Lukowski with an assist from Katie Kleine. The Lakers got one back two minutes before the end of regulation on a goal from Liadka with an assist from Amanda Woods. Kassie Kleine (Sr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Shelly Bateman (Sr., Fulton, N.Y.) each took a shot before the end of regulation to try to score another goal, but both came up empty-handed.
Varonier made three saves in the loss, while Maggie Horan made six.
Oswego State looks to add another conference win Saturday (Oct. 6)against host Buffalo State at 4 p.m.
