Debuting in 1960, “The Fantasticks,” with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, has been called “the world’s longest running musical.”

It features the songs, “Try to Remember,” “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” and “They Were You” – all which have become popular standards.

The story centers on Matt and Luisa, two young lovers, and their meddling parents who contract with the mysterious El Gallo to ensure a happy ending.

Life, however, is more than just a love song under the moonlight.

The eight member cast features: Douglas McCall as El Gallo, Marlina Beebe as Luisa, Donnie Williams as Matt, Marguerite Beebe as Bellomy, Renee Fenske as Hucklebee, Brian Pringle as Henry, Stephfond Brunson as Mortimer, and Zoe Bolio as The Mute.

Matt (Donnie Williams, center), comes under the attack of “bandits” Henry (Brian Pringle, left) and El Gallo (Douglas McCall, right) as he tries to prevent the abduction of his true love, Luisa, in a scene from Fulton Community Theatre’s production of the classic musical “The Fantasticks.” The production runs weekends April 19 through 28 on the Jubilee Hall stage of Holy Trinity Parish, Fulton.

The production is directed by Kathleen DeGolyer, with musical direction by Abel Searor.

For DeGolyer and FCT, “The Fantasticks” is a reunion with an old friend.

The musical was featured in the theatre’s fifth season in 1994, with DeGolyer playing the role of Hucklebee.

“It is a piece that stays with you. I’ve wanted to reprise it for the last several years and now because of the cooperation of the church and our sponsors the work we have put into our theatre space, we have come back around again,” DeGolyer said.

The Fantasticks is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
