FULTON – Months of preparation paid off for two Fulton City School District elementary school Battle of the Books teams, as they won their way to the next level of competition.
“The Electrifying Readers” from Volney Elementary celebrated with a Level 1 (grades three and four) team win because they achieved 104 points, while “Some Random Team” from Lanigan Elementary’s near perfect score of 120 earned the Level 2 (grades five and six) participants a spot at the Oswego County Battle of the Books.
The two teams were a part of the dozens of elementary students who flocked to the Fulton Education Center for the Level 1 and Level 2 battles between Volney, Granby, Fairgrieve and Lanigan schools.
Students were split into teams of two or three people and answered a series of 16 questions related to details from the 10 books each team was required to read ahead of the book battle.
Each question asked began with “In which book,” as students were tasked to dig deeply into the details of each chapter book to recall the answer.
“You got this,” one parent whispered to her child during the competition.
Teams received eight points if the correct title and author were given, but only five points were awarded if only the correct title was given.
The education center’s auditorium filled with classmates, family members and teachers who showed support for team members throughout both the Level 1 and Level 2 battles.
Fulton Superintendent Brian Pulvino commended all participants for their celebration of literacy and reading, and the commitment required to prepare for the friendly competition.
Each student at the FCSD battle received a participation certificate, while the winning teams received both medals and red T-shirts to wear at the Oswego County battle.
