FULTON, NY – For Kelly Newton of Granby, exercise isn’t just a good idea. It could save a life.
For the last year, she has been gaining strength and losing weight so she can be healthy enough to donate a kidney to a friend in need of a transplant.
If it weren’t for the Fulton Family Y and its Membership for All program, her goal would be out of reach, she said.
“With the Y on my side, I’m going to make it,” said Newton, who has already lost 12 pounds. “It’s just a wicked positive place to be. It’s renewed my faith in people.”
Membership for All is the Y’s sliding scale financial aid program. It ensures that everyone can belong to the Y and use its services, such as childcare and summer camp, regardless of their financial situation.
To keep the program going strong, YMCA volunteers this month are launching
the Fulton Family YMCA Annual Support Campaign.
Their goal is to raise $50,000 – enough to maintain Membership for All for the next year.
One of the 25 volunteer campaigners is Fulton chiropractor Brett Tallents.
As a kid, he learned to swim at the Fulton Y.
Today, he exercises there at least twice a week and all four of his four children participate in the Y’s swim team, the Speed Demons.
He volunteered as a campaigner because he believes everybody deserves a chance to learn, grow and thrive at the Y.
“The Y is a valuable community resource for people of all walks of life,” Tallents said. “A healthy community like ours should include a healthy YMCA.”
Tallents said he has been talking with friends and community groups, telling them how the Y is changing lives and saving lives in the community.
He said he has been pleased by the generous response.
If you believe in strengthening our community, the Y could use your help.
