Fulton high school girls wishing they could play varsity hockey now have the opportunity.
The Board of Education approved a plan that allows Fulton girls to play as part of a combined team on Oswego High School’s varsity squad.
Fulton players will be covered under the Fulton school district’s insurance and there are no costs for ice time or insurance, said Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch. “There’s no financial cost to the district. On the surface, it’s a nice opportunity.”
The district will not transport students to and from Oswego’s practices or games.
Combined teams are fairly common. Three Oswego County schools have teamed up in the past to create a hockey team called Ontario Bay. A few years ago, Fulton’s boys varsity team was a combined team with Bishop Ludden and Phoenix.
Lynch said Oswego’s athletic department extended the invitation.
There are very few girls hockey teams, which means long-distance travel for those players. The closest away game for the team will be at Skaneateles. The away schedule features games and scrimmages in Ithaca, Canton, Potsdam, Alexandria Bay and Albany.
The team plays its home games at Crisafulli Rink at Fort Ontario.
