Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,Iâ€â€Pulaski) said today the decision to charge $50 for businesses to re-register their sales tax certificate of authority hurts small businesses and is unnecessary.
In recent weeks, the state Department of Tax and Finance has begun to send letters out to businesses, notifying them that if they file sales tax quarterly, they must re-register their sales tax certificate and pay a $50 fee. It’s expected to increase revenue by $32.6 million in 2009-10 and $3.8 million in 2010-11.
“This is one of the revenue-creation streams that is unfair to businesses the state is, unfortunately, becoming known for. I voted against this measure in the 2008-09 budget and will continue to vote against such measures as they are put forth,†said Barclay.
“I have heard from a number of businesses who are tired of the state applying more fees to their already-considerable costs of doing business here. Collecting state sales tax and submitting it to the state is already asking enough from our businesses. It’s simple: We don’t need to charge them more money to do business in this state,†added Barclay.
