OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s soccer team was unable to complete a comeback bid as it fell short in a 2-1 loss Saturday afternoon against host Potsdam. The Bears proved to have a deadly one-two combination as Cortney Poirier scored both goals with Heather Johnson assisting each score. The Lakers fell to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears moved to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Potsdam shot out to an early lead in the seventh minute when Johnson fed Poirier right in front of the net for an easy tap in past Laker goalkeeper Christina Fregosi. The two connected again in the 20th minute in similar fashion with a cross right in front of net, followed by a Poirier goal.
Ten minutes later Oswego State drew to within one when Stephanie San Antonio fed a long ball upfield to Shelly Bateman, who redirected the ball into the back of the net with a header. Despite three shots on goal in the second half by Lindsey Forte, Melissa Sluka, and Kelly Adams, the Lakers could not convert the equalizer.
Fregosi finished with five saves in net for Oswego State, while Caitlin Titus made four stops in the win for Potsdam. The Lakers continue their six-game road trip Friday, as they visit Buffalo State for a 4 p.m. start.
