OSWEGO, NY -On July 27, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sara E. Landers, 22, of 216 Rochester St., Fulton, NY, on the charge of second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony.
The investigation started on July 5, when Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of an unresponsive infant in the town of Volney.
Further investigation determined that Mrs. Landers recklessly caused the death of her nine-month old child.
The cause of death was determined to be environmental hyperthermia by the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office.
The arrest was the result of a collaborative investigation conducted by the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, Oswego County Coroner / District Attorney’s Office, Oswego County Department of Social Services, and the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to Oswego County Sheriff Reuel Todd, the infant had been left unattended in a camper.
Someone placed a call to 9-1-1 and reported “an unresponsive child,†he said.
The child was taken to the hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival, the sheriff said.
The body was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
“It was a waiting game,†the sheriff explained. “We needed to have the information from the ME’s office before we could make an arrest.â€
Mrs. Landers was arraigned before the Hon. James Aluzzi, Town of Volney Court and remanded to the Oswego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bail bond.
She is scheduled to reappear in court on 8/16/10.
