FULTON – As we continue to look forward to sunny days and outdoor activities for fall, we would like you to consider participating in the Fulton Family YMCAs’ 4th Annual Century Marathon, Half Marathon (13.1 mile and 26.2 mile) Run/Walk event on Sunday October 9, 2011!
When choosing a race, we hope everyone knows bigger isn’t necessarily better. We hope runners and walkers have a philanthropic spirit and choose a race for its cause and the benefits it provides its community.
The money we raise when we offer a race allows us to provide programming for people in our community who need our services. We help families who need childcare before and after school and on days off. We give financial assistance to adults who would benefit from a healthier lifestyle. Our heated pool is utilized by adults with illnesses or physical and mental disabilities. Our facility is open to health seekers of all types trying to improve their lives with like-minded people. Last year we provided over $130,000 in financial assistance in the Fulton Community.
The Century Marathon and Half Marathon started as a tribute to Ruth Ripley, an Oswego County resident, avid runner and cancer survivor! Ms. Ripley had successfully completed a marathon in each of the 50 states when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. With the will to overcome her diagnosis, Ms. Ripley extended her goal. She would complete 100 marathons!
In the spring of 2008 The Fulton Family YMCA recognized the spirit and motivation of Ruth Ripley and hosted The First Annual Century Marathon and Half Marathon event. That year, Ms. Ripley completed her goal as she finished her 100th marathon right here in Oswego County. It is with honor that The Fulton Family YMCA hosts Ms. Ripley as she continues to support and participate in the Century Marathon event each year!
New this year, race organizers have decided to add 10K Run. The course has been certified and goes along the same route as the Marathon/Half Marathon course. The 10K is a run only, which allows those who like to do shorter distances to participate. Organizers thought this would be a good way to get those who are apprehensive about the longer distances to have an event to participate in.
Every participant registered will receive a finisher medal and for those who register on time will get an Under Armour short sleeve shirt, so don’t hold out and take the chance of not getting one. Those who enter the 10K event will be given nicely designed cotton t-shirts.
Participants may find the entry form by logging onto fultonymca.com, going to a local YMCA or go to EzRacereg.com to register. We will also take registrations over the phone by calling the Fulton YMCA at 598-9622.
The organizers are looking forward to this year’s event and are still searching for sponsors. Consider joining our current sponsors; Community Chiropractic, Pathfinder Bank, Fulton Savings Bank, Empower Federal Credit Union, Beacon Hotel, MetLife, Scientific Tool Co., Inc., Oswego County Ambulance Service, Tim Horton’s and Frito Lay. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities please contact the event organizers. For more information regarding the 2011 marathon event please call the Fulton YMCA at 598-9622 or see our centurymarathon facebook page.
