Funeral Arrangements set for SPC Kyle Robert Rookey

OSWEGO, NY – SPC Kyle Robert Rookey, 23 died Sunday September 2, 2012, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan while serving in the US Army.

Kyle was based out of Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was born in Oswego and was the son of George E. Rookey and Carol Sue Slater Akers of Oswego.

He was the husband of Victoria Melton Rookey of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Kyle was a graduate of Oswego High School Class of 2007 and attended Monroe Community College and Cayuga Community College before joining the Army in March 2010.

Kyle was in cross-country in middle school and track at OHS.

He loved to participate and work at the Renaissance Faire.

Kyle was involved in music starting in elementary school and continued all through high school.

At OHS, he was very involved in marching band, chorus and the theatre with the tech crew.

In addition to his parents and wife, Kyle is survived by his daughter, Flora Kyleigh Rookey of Colorado Springs; two sisters, Angela K. Rookey and Elizabeth R. Rookey both of Oswego; one brother, David J. Wallace of Oswego; his godparents, Edward and Agnes Vivlemore of Oswego; his maternal grandparents, Mary Lou (Benjamin) Hutson of New Haven, David T. (Sue Ann) Slater of Omaha Neb., Thomas H. (Deborah) Akers of Austin Texas; several cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert E. and Margaret A. Rookey of Oswego.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Burial with full military honors will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

On behalf of the family, the Oswego High School Class of 1981 has started a fund in memory of Kyle to benefit the music and theatre departments at Oswego High School.

Donations may be sent to Oswego City School District, Attn: Treasurer, 120 E. First St., Oswego, NY 13126.

Donations to a college fund for Kyle’s daughter may be made payable to Flora Kyleigh Rookey in care of Carol Sue Akers 112 Niagara St., Oswego, NY 13126

  1. Dear Carol, George, David, Angela and Elizabeth; My heart goes out to all of you mourning the passing of your beloved son, and brother. As a mother of a son who was in the military my fears have become your reality, and I am heartfully so Sorry! Our sons graduated the same year from Oswego High School, and Angie and my daughter Mara swam together . Both Colin and Mara extend their condolences and are saddened by your extreme loss as am I.
